Taking away

Prince Ethan invited Lieutenant Tanaka for a drink on the top deck of his ship, the Radiant Dawn. The evening sky was painted with hues of orange and pink, and the gentle hum of the ship’s engines provided a soothing backdrop. Ethan handed Tanaka a crystal glass filled with a sparkling, amber liquid. She took a sip, unaware that the drink was spiked with a potent knockout drug.

As the drug took effect, Tanaka’s vision blurred, and she felt her strength ebb away. Ethan caught her as she collapsed, gently removing her commlink and GPS device. He placed them on the dock, ensuring they would be found later, and carried her onto his ship. The Radiant Dawn slipped away from the dock with little notice from the guards, its departure masked by the bustling activity of the port.

Captain Cullen glanced at the clock on the bridge of the USS Tecumseh. “Tanaka is never late to her duty post,” he muttered, a frown creasing his brow. “AI, locate Lieutenant Tanaka.”

The ship’s AI responded in its calm, mechanical voice, “Her commlink and GPS are on the dock, but there is no biosignal connected to the GPS.”

Cullen’s frown deepened. “Sound general quarters. Security, retrieve Tanaka’s commlink and search the area. She may be unable to communicate.”

The ship’s alarm blared, and the crew sprang into action. Security teams fanned out across the dock, searching for any sign of Tanaka. Cullen stared out at the horizon, his mind racing with possibilities. He knew Tanaka was resourceful and resilient, but something about this situation felt off. He couldn’t shake the feeling that they were running out of time.

Captain Cullen stood on the bridge of the USS Tecumseh, his mind racing. He knew time was of the essence. “AI, initiate a full scan of the area for any unusual activity or unauthorized departures within the last hour,” he ordered.

“Scanning now,” the AI responded. Moments later, it reported, “One vessel, the Radiant Dawn, departed the dock approximately 45 minutes ago. Departure was logged as routine, but there was minimal guard presence.”

Cullen’s eyes narrowed. “Get me everything we have on the Radiant Dawn and its owner, Prince Ethan.”

As the AI compiled the data, Cullen turned to his first officer, Commander Reyes. “Reyes, assemble a team. I want a thorough search of the dock and surrounding areas. Look for any clues that might indicate where Tanaka was taken.”

Reyes nodded and quickly mobilized a search team. Meanwhile, the AI provided a detailed dossier on Prince Ethan and the Radiant Dawn. Cullen scanned the information, noting Ethan’s political connections and the ship’s advanced stealth capabilities.

“AI, can we track the Radiant Dawn’s trajectory?” Cullen asked.

“Based on its last known coordinates and typical flight patterns, I can project a probable course,” the AI replied, displaying a map with a highlighted route.

Cullen studied the map. “Set a course to intercept. And prepare a message to be sent to Prince Ethan. I want to know why he took Tanaka and what he plans to do with her.”

As the USS Tecumseh altered its course, Cullen felt a mix of determination and unease. He knew they were heading into a potentially dangerous confrontation, but he was resolved to bring Tanaka back safely. The stakes were high, and the clock was ticking.

----------------

Tanaka’s eyes fluttered open, her head pounding and her vision still slightly blurred. She tried to move, but her limbs felt heavy and uncoordinated. As her senses gradually returned, she realized she was in an unfamiliar room, the soft hum of the ship’s engines a constant background noise.

“Where am I?” she muttered, struggling to sit up. Her mind raced as she pieced together the last thing she remembered: the drink with Prince Ethan, the sudden wave of dizziness, and then darkness.

Her training kicked in, and she quickly assessed her situation. The absence of her commlink and GPS device confirmed her worst fears: she was cut off from her team. Anger flared within her as she realized she had been drugged and abducted.

Tanaka took a deep breath, forcing herself to stay calm. She needed to gather information and find a way to escape. She scanned the room, noting the security cameras in the corners and the locked door. She knew she had to be cautious and strategic.

“Think, Tanaka,” she whispered to herself. “There has to be a way out of here.”

She began to search the room for anything that could be used as a tool or weapon. Her mind raced with possibilities, and she vowed to make Prince Ethan pay for this betrayal. She knew Captain Cullen and the crew of the USS Tecumseh would be looking for her, but she couldn’t rely solely on them. She had to find a way to signal them or escape on her own.

As she continued her search, a steely determination settled over her. She would not be a helpless victim. She would fight back and find a way to turn the tables on her captors.

A speaker in the room crackled to life. “Sorry, Elizabeth Tanaka. We have an appointment with my father. He wanted you to come visit. I promise you will not be harmed.”

Her rage started to bubble up within her, but she forced it down, knowing that anger would cloud her judgment. She needed to stay sharp and focused. Tanaka continued to search the room, her eyes darting to every corner, every shadow. She found a small, loose panel near the floor and pried it open, revealing a bundle of wires. It wasn’t much, but it was a start.

She carefully examined the wires, trying to determine their purpose. If she could disable the cameras or the lock on the door, it would give her a better chance of escaping. Her fingers worked quickly and efficiently, her training guiding her every move.

The speaker crackled to life again. “Elizabeth, please, there’s no need for this. My father simply wants to talk.”

Ignoring the voice, Tanaka focused on the task at hand. She managed to short-circuit the camera system, plunging the room into darkness. It was a small victory, but it gave her a sense of control.

Tanaka’s heart pounded as the door swung open, revealing two guards with tasers aimed directly at her. She had anticipated this moment, and her mind raced through the possible scenarios. She couldn’t afford to be reckless; she needed to outsmart them.

“Elizabeth, please,” the voice from the speaker pleaded again, “there’s no need for violence. My father just wants to talk.”

Ignoring the voice, Tanaka assessed her options. The darkness gave her a slight advantage, but the tasers were a serious threat. She needed to create a distraction. Her eyes flicked to the bundle of wires she had exposed earlier. An idea formed in her mind.

With a swift motion, she yanked a handful of wires free, causing a shower of sparks. The sudden burst of light and noise startled the guards, and in that split second, Tanaka sprang into action. She lunged at the nearest guard, using the element of surprise to her advantage. Her training took over as she disarmed him with a quick, precise movement, sending the taser skidding across the floor.

The second guard recovered quickly, but Tanaka was already moving. She grabbed the first guard’s arm and swung him around, using him as a shield. The second guard hesitated, not wanting to risk hitting his comrade. Tanaka took advantage of the momentary pause to close the distance between them. She delivered a swift, incapacitating blow to the second guard, who crumpled to the ground.

Breathing heavily, Tanaka took a moment to assess the situation. Both guards were down, but she knew she didn’t have much time before reinforcements arrived. She quickly searched the guards for anything useful, finding a keycard and a small knife. She pocketed both and moved towards the door.

As she stepped into the hallway, she heard the voice from the speaker again, this time more urgent. “Elizabeth, stop! You don’t understand what’s at stake here!”

Tanaka ignored the voice and focused on her surroundings. The hallway was dimly lit, with doors lining both sides. She needed to find a way out, but she also needed to gather information. She decided to head towards the end of the hallway, hoping to find a control room or an exit.

Her mind raced with thoughts of Prince Ethan and his father. What could they possibly want with her? And why had they gone to such lengths to abduct her? She pushed the questions aside for now, focusing on the immediate task of escaping.

As she reached the end of the hallway, she found a door marked “Control Room.” She swiped the keycard and the door clicked open. Inside, she found a bank of monitors and a control panel. This was her chance to gather information and possibly find a way to signal the USS Tecumseh.

Tanaka quickly scanned the monitors, looking for any clues about her location. She saw images of various rooms, including what appeared to be a large conference room where several people were gathered. She recognized Prince Ethan among them, deep in conversation with an older man who must be his father.

She turned her attention to the control panel, searching for a way to send a distress signal. Her fingers flew over the controls, her training guiding her every move. She managed to access the communication system and sent a coded message to the USS Tecumseh, hoping it would reach them in time.

Just as she finished, the door behind her burst open and more guards flooded into the room. Tanaka braced herself for the fight, her determination unwavering. She would not go down without a fight. She would find a way to escape and make Prince Ethan pay for his betrayal.

Tanaka braced herself as the guards flooded into the control room. She fought fiercely, her training and instincts guiding her every move. But the sheer number of guards overwhelmed her. Despite her best efforts, she was eventually subdued, the guards pinning her to the ground and securing her hands behind her back.

“Elizabeth Tanaka,” the voice from the speaker said, now coming from the doorway. Prince Ethan stepped into the room, his expression a mix of regret and determination. “I told you, there’s no need for this.”

Tanaka glared at him, her eyes burning with defiance. “What do you want, Ethan? Why have you done this?”

Ethan sighed, motioning for the guards to lift her to her feet. “It’s not what you think. My father needs to speak with you. It’s about something much bigger than you or me.”

“Save your excuses,” Tanaka spat. “You betrayed me. You drugged and abducted me. Why should I believe anything you say?”

Ethan’s face hardened. “Because it’s the truth. My father has information that could change everything. But he needed to ensure you would listen.”

Tanaka struggled against the guards’ grip, but they held her firmly. “And you thought kidnapping me was the best way to get my attention?”

“It was the only way,” Ethan replied, his voice tinged with frustration. “You wouldn’t have come willingly. Please, just hear him out.”

Tanaka’s mind raced. She didn’t trust Ethan, but she needed to understand what was going on. “Fine,” she said through gritted teeth. “I’ll listen. But if this is some kind of trick, you’ll regret it.”

Ethan nodded, signaling the guards to release her. “Follow me.”

They led her down a series of corridors until they reached a large, ornate door. Ethan opened it, revealing a grand conference room. At the head of the table sat an older man with a commanding presence—Ethan’s father.

“Elizabeth Tanaka,” the older man said, rising to his feet. “Thank you for agreeing to speak with us. My name is Lord Alistair. We have much to discuss.”

Tanaka crossed her arms, her eyes narrowing. “You have five minutes. Start talking.”

Lord Alistair gestured for her to sit, but she remained standing. “Very well,” he said. “We have reason to believe that a catastrophic event is imminent. An event that could threaten the entire world. We need your help to prevent it.”

Tanaka’s skepticism was evident. “And why should I believe you?”

“Because,” Lord Alistair replied, “the Sky People have opened a time rift in the Atlantic Ocean. This rift has pulled the USS Tecumseh into their future. It appears to be an accident, but it’s due to the negligence of the Sky People, who don’t care about the environmental problems they’ve created.”

Tanaka’s eyes widened. “A time rift? That’s impossible.”

“It’s very real,” Ethan interjected. “And the consequences are dire. The rift is destabilizing, and if it collapses, it could cause a chain reaction that would devastate the entire planet.”

“We need your help to close the rift and bring the USS Tecumseh back to your time,” Lord Alistair continued. “You have the skills and knowledge to make this happen. But we must act quickly.”

Tanaka felt a chill run down her spine. The stakes were higher than she had imagined. She had to find a way to trust Ethan and his father, at least for now. “Alright,” she said slowly. “I’ll help you. But if I find out this is a trick, there will be consequences.”

Lord Alistair nodded. “Understood. Time is of the essence. Let’s get to work.  I sent a message to the Imperium to meet us at the Great Obelisk.  Imperatrix Auriella will assume it's a prisoner exchange, but this time we will ask her and your captain to enter the Obelisk itself, because the key to fixing this is in the basement of the Great Obelisk."

We are you

The alarms on the dock blared, echoing across the water. An enemy ship had been sighted. The Imperatrix turned to Captain Cullen, her eyes narrowing. “It seems the Muricans are being foolish again. I must oversee the defense. Thank you for the tour of this magnificent vessel.”

With a regal nod, the Imperatrix departed the ship, striding purposefully towards the dock where her guards were positioning rail guns in preparation for an amphibious assault.

Before any shots could be fired, the Murican battle standard was lowered, replaced by the white flag of parley. The brooch on her cloak glowed faintly, signaling an incoming transmission.

“We come in peace, Auriella. No weapons, just a few gifts for your guests. We request permission to dock. We won’t need your quarters; we intend only to visit the boat at the dock. You have already bested us on the battlefield,” said Prince Ethan.

Imperatrix Auriella felt a surge of suspicion and annoyance. “I doubt abominations like yourselves have anything of value to offer. But go ahead, embarrass yourselves by speaking with Cullen, Smythe, or Tanaka. I look forward to seeing how poorly you fare.”

A beep sounded on the communication console.

“Trouble already?” asked Cullen.

“The source of the communication is the other ship that just docked,” answered Tanaka.

“Put it on screen.”

The face of Prince Ethan appeared on the monitor.

“My apologies for the atrocious first impressions we made. We come in peace, unarmed. We have discovered a few relics that rightfully belong to you, rather than our museums in Memphis and Birmingham. We request a meeting in your ready room.”

Cullen glanced at Tanaka, then at Smythe. After a moment of contemplation, Cullen responded, “Granted. See you in an hour.”

“Thank you for your graciousness, Captain.”

As the hour passed, the tension on the ship was palpable. Captain Cullen, Commander Smythe, and Lieutenant Tanaka gathered in the ready room, preparing for the meeting. The room was adorned with maps, tactical displays, and a large table at its center.

The door slid open, and Prince Ethan entered, flanked by two aides carrying ornate boxes. He bowed slightly, a gesture of respect. “Thank you for seeing us, Captain.”

Cullen nodded curtly. “Let’s get to the point. What are these gifts you mentioned?”

Prince Ethan gestured to his aides, who carefully placed the boxes on the table and opened them. Inside were a copy of the United States Constitution, a triangle-folded United States flag, and a 64-terabyte flash drive. “These items are symbols of our history and heritage. We believe they hold significance for you and your crew.”

Tanaka leaned in, examining the items closely. “These are indeed remarkable. How did you come by them?”

Ethan sighed. “Our ancestors preserved these artifacts, believing they held power and meaning. We now realize they are part of a shared legacy. Returning them is a gesture of goodwill, a step towards peace.”

Smythe raised an eyebrow. “And what do you expect in return?”

“Only a chance to prove our sincerity,” Ethan replied. “We seek to end the hostilities between our nations. These gifts are a symbol of our commitment to a new beginning.”

Imperatrix Auriella, who had been listening from a concealed alcove, stepped forward. “Your words are bold, Prince Ethan. But actions speak louder. We will accept these gifts and consider your proposal. However, any sign of deceit will be met with swift retribution.”

Ethan met her gaze steadily. “Understood, Imperatrix. We have no intention of deceiving you. We only wish for a future where our peoples can coexist in peace.”

Auriella nodded, then turned to Captain Cullen. “My apologies, Captain, for the interruption. This meeting is on your ship, and I should have deferred to your authority. Thank you for your patience.”

Cullen inclined his head. “No need for apologies, Imperatrix. We all want the same thing—peace.”

As Ethan and his aides departed, Cullen turned to Auriella. “Do you believe him?”

Auriella’s eyes narrowed. “I don’t trust easily, Captain. But if there’s a chance to end this conflict, we must explore it. Prepare the council. We have much to discuss.”

As Prince Ethan and his aides departed, Commander Smythe took the 64-terabyte flash drive and inserted it into the ship’s secure data port. The screen flickered to life, displaying a directory filled with PDF files, each meticulously labeled with dates and events spanning 2000 years of history from the Murican perspective.

Smythe began to scroll through the files, opening a few at random. The first document contained detailed text, pictures, and videos of early Murican settlements, their rise to power, and significant historical events. The images were vivid, showing ancient battles, cultural ceremonies, and pivotal moments in their history.

“Captain, you need to see this,” Smythe called out, his voice tinged with awe.

Cullen and Tanaka joined him, peering over his shoulder at the screen. Smythe opened another file, revealing a comprehensive account of the Great War, including strategies, key battles, and the eventual truce. The videos showed both the horrors of war and moments of unexpected camaraderie between opposing forces.

“This is incredible,” Tanaka murmured. “It’s like a window into their soul. They’ve documented everything, even their mistakes and regrets.”

Smythe nodded. “It’s a treasure trove of information. If this is genuine, it could change everything we know about them.”

Imperatrix Auriella, who had been observing quietly, stepped forward. “Commander Smythe, continue your examination. Verify the authenticity of these documents. If they are genuine, we may have a foundation for peace.”

Smythe saluted. “Yes, Imperatrix. I’ll conduct a thorough analysis and report back.”

As Smythe delved deeper into the contents of the flash drive, the room buzzed with a mix of curiosity and cautious optimism. The detailed history, presented with such transparency, hinted at a possible new chapter in their relations with the Muricans.

A change of tactics

As Duke Aiden and Prince Ethan arrived home, the King who was waiting for them smiled in relief.

“My boys. I’m glad you are both still alive. This new enemy is stronger but also weaker than any normal enemy. The Sky People sent more information about these Ancient Muricans. They are from our far distant past, when Murica was the supreme power globally. Europe were our vassals. And the Imperium did not exist yet. We were one nation under God,” said the King.

“That explains the name tags on their uniforms, written in Ancient Murican script. I saw that while I was in the Imperial dungeon,” said Ethan.

“That also explains the banner on their ship. We got a few pictures of the ship during our failed capture on the open sea,” said Aiden.

“That means, maybe persuasion might be stronger than force. I began researching to find weaknesses. These Ancient Muricans are from about 2000 years ago. And the Oracle… that was a crew member of that ship who was rescued from the sea 1700 years ago. The precursor to the Imperium used cyborg technology to make him useful, and available to the Imperium. The third world war caused the Genesis of the Imperium. The fourth world war, also fought here on our soil, is why Murica was unable to reunite,” said the King.

“So we need to somehow get an audience with these Ancients. Maybe bring a gift?” asked Ethan.

“One way or another we need to get the crew of that ship to listen to us.”

The King nodded thoughtfully. “A gift might be a good start. But we need to understand their culture and values. The Sky People mentioned that the Ancient Muricans had a strong sense of honor and duty. Perhaps we can appeal to that.”

Aiden stepped forward, his eyes gleaming with determination. “I suggest we send a delegation. A small, unarmed group to show our peaceful intentions. We can bring artifacts from their time, things that might resonate with them.”

Ethan added, “And we should include someone who can speak their language fluently. The Sky People might have records or even a translator who can help us.”

The King agreed. “Very well. Aiden, you will lead this delegation. Ethan, you will assist in gathering the artifacts and finding a suitable translator. We must act quickly before the Imperium decides to take more drastic measures.”

As the brothers left the throne room to prepare for their mission, the King turned to his advisor. “We are treading on dangerous ground. But if we can forge an alliance with these Ancient Muricans, it could change the course of our history.”

In the days that followed, Aiden and Ethan worked tirelessly. They scoured the royal archives for artifacts, consulted with historians, and coordinated with the Sky People to find a translator. The tension in the air was palpable, but so was the hope.

Finally, the day came for the delegation to set sail. As they boarded the ship, Aiden looked back at the castle, his heart heavy with the weight of their mission. “We must succeed,” he whispered to himself. “For the future of our kingdom.”

The ship sailed towards the horizon, carrying with it the hopes and dreams of a nation. The journey ahead was uncertain, but Aiden and Ethan were ready to face whatever challenges lay in their path.

Gunboat Diplomacy

Duke Aiden received the grim news: the mission to capture the USS Tecumseh had failed disastrously. The loss of a flagship and fifteen escorts was a severe blow, though most of the sailors managed to survive and reach land. His attempt to succeed where his cousin, Prince Ethan, had failed ended in a catastrophic defeat at sea. The surviving sailors regrouped with their allies in the rebel faction within the Imperium, but the cost of the lost ships was staggering.

As Aiden traveled with his retinue to retrieve his cousin, his thoughts grew darker, weighed down by his compounded failure and the Crown Prince’s earlier defeat. The prisoners he was trading remained defiant, their spirits unbroken. The Imperium’s grip was undeniably stronger this time.

Aiden’s warband, numbering about 1,500 men-at-arms, approached the agreed meeting spot. There, the formidable 1st Imperial Legion awaited them, with 6,000 elite Imperial Guards, most of whom were bonded and married pairs of women. At the forefront, in her personal armored vehicle, was Imperatrix Aurellia, overseeing the entire legion. This was unmistakably an Imperial Triumph parade.

Walking beside the Imperatrix were strangers from the ship. Behind them, the Crown Prince and the remnants of his personal retinue were led forward, their defeat evident.

“Duke Aiden, I believe this stray belongs to you,” mocked Aurellia, her voice dripping with condescension as she relished the barely concealed hatred in Aiden’s eyes.

“Here are the prisoners we are trading for the Crown Prince,” Aiden replied, striving to maintain a stoic and professional demeanor despite the turmoil within.

Aurellia’s eyes gleamed with satisfaction as she observed the exchange. The tension in the air was palpable, a silent testament to the power dynamics at play. The Imperatrix’s presence was overwhelming, her authority unquestionable.

As the prisoners were handed over, Aiden couldn’t help but notice the strangers from the ship. They were unlike any he had seen before, their attire and demeanor hinting at advanced technology and a different way of life. Whispers among his men suggested they might be the fabled “Sky People,” rumored to possess knowledge and power beyond comprehension.

But Aiden and Ethan knew better. The Sky People had informed the Muricans of the ship’s arrival, hinting that it would change the balance of the war. This ship was not of the Sky People, but something else entirely—an unknown variable that could tip the scales in unforeseen ways.

Aurellia’s voice cut through his thoughts. “You must be wondering about our guests,” she said, a sly smile playing on her lips. “They have much to offer, and their allegiance will ensure the Imperium’s dominance.”

Aiden’s gaze shifted to the Crown Prince, who stood with a mixture of defiance and resignation. The once-proud leader now seemed a shadow of his former self, his spirit battered by the relentless might of the Imperium.

“Your cousin’s failure is now yours, Duke Aiden,” Aurellia continued, her tone mocking. “But perhaps you can redeem yourself by proving useful to us. The Imperium always has room for those who know their place.”

Aiden clenched his fists, struggling to maintain his composure. “We have fulfilled our part of the bargain,” he said evenly. “The Crown Prince is yours. Now release our men.”

Aurellia nodded, and with a wave of her hand, the prisoners were freed. As they rejoined Aiden’s ranks, the Duke couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of a much larger conflict. The presence of the Sky People hinted at a future where the balance of power could shift dramatically.

As the Imperatrix and her legion departed, Aiden turned to his cousin. “We need to regroup and rethink our strategy,” he said quietly. “The Imperium is stronger than ever, and we must find a way to counter their new allies.”

Prince Ethan nodded, his eyes filled with determination. “We will find a way, Aiden. We must. For the sake of our people and our future.”

With renewed resolve, the Duke and his retinue began their journey back, knowing that the road ahead would be fraught with challenges. The stakes had never been higher, and the fate of their world hung in the balance.

-----------

Captain Cullen turned to the Imperatrix, and said, "would you prefer to return home by sea? We got room for a few guests. " He pointed at the ship waiting at the harbor. The Tecumseh proved to be a major presence.

"I see this as the start of a wonderful friendship, I accept your offer.  The Tribune can get the legion home."

As the Imperatrix stood on the upper deck of the Tecumseh, her thoughts drifted back to the events that had led her here. The alliance with Captain Cullen was a significant step, one that could alter the course of her people’s future. She felt a mixture of relief and apprehension. Relief, because she had found a potential ally in a world where trust was a rare commodity. Apprehension, because alliances were fragile, and the stakes were incredibly high.

She looked out at the horizon, the setting sun painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. The beauty of the moment was not lost on her, but her mind was occupied with the weight of her responsibilities. As Imperatrix, she had always been the pillar of strength for her people, the one who made the hard decisions. This new alliance was another such decision, one that could bring prosperity or peril.

Her thoughts turned to the Tribune and the legion. She trusted the Tribune implicitly, knowing she would lead the legion home safely. Yet, she couldn’t help but feel a pang of guilt for not being with them. Leadership often meant making sacrifices, and this was one of those moments. She hoped her people would understand and see the bigger picture.

The Imperatrix also pondered the nature of her relationship with Captain Cullen. There was a mutual respect between them, but she wondered if it could grow into something more profound. Trust was the foundation of any strong alliance, and she was determined to build that with Cullen. She admired his leadership and the loyalty he inspired in his crew. Perhaps, in time, they could become true partners, not just in battle but in shaping a better future.

As the night began to fall, the Imperatrix felt a renewed sense of purpose. She was not just fighting for survival; she was fighting for a future where her people could thrive. The journey ahead would be challenging, but she was ready to face it head-on. With allies like Captain Cullen and his crew, she believed they could overcome any obstacle.

The Great Obelisk

The AI received an urgent message from Captain Cullen, cosigned by Lieutenant Tanaka.

“Rendezvous with the Away team at designated coordinates.”

The ship’s engines roared to life, systems humming with energy. Weapons systems activated, and the tactical alert blared, rousing the remaining crew from their quarters. A holographic map flickered into existence, projecting a green dot over Washington DC—their destination.

But the path was fraught with danger. Hundreds of red dots swarmed the ocean, representing enemy ships lying in wait. The crew braced themselves, knowing the journey ahead would be perilous. Every second counted as they prepared for the imminent confrontation.

As the ship approached the first cluster of red dots, the crew’s tension was palpable. The AI’s sensors picked up the primitive enemy vessels—rusted hulks with outdated weaponry, yet numerous and determined.

“Enemy ships within range,” the AI announced. “Prepare for engagement.”

Commander Volk stood at the helm, his eyes fixed on the holographic display. “All hands, battle stations!”

The first enemy ship, a decrepit battleship, lumbered into view. Its cannons fired sporadically, the shots splashing harmlessly into the ocean. Tactical Officer Akita , stationed at the tactical console, quickly assessed the threat.

“Primitive but persistent,” she muttered. “Target their propulsion systems. Let’s slow them down.”

The ship’s advanced weaponry locked onto the enemy vessel. With a series of precise strikes, the enemy’s engines were disabled, leaving it dead in the water. But more ships were closing in, their sheer numbers a potential threat.

“Incoming torpedoes!” a crew member shouted.

The AI activated the ship’s defensive measures, intercepting the torpedoes with pinpoint accuracy. Explosions lit up the ocean, sending plumes of water skyward. The crew worked in unison, their training and the ship’s advanced technology giving them the upper hand.

“Focus fire on the lead ships,” Commander Mercer ordered. “We need to break through their line.”

Laser beams and plasma bolts streaked across the water, tearing through the enemy fleet. One by one, the primitive ships were disabled or destroyed, their crews abandoning ship in lifeboats.

As the last enemy vessel sank beneath the waves, a brief silence fell over the bridge. The crew took a moment to catch their breath, knowing this was just the beginning.

“Status report,” Commander Volk demanded.

“Minimal damage to our ship,” Tactical Officer Akita replied. “We’re clear to proceed.”

“Good. Set course for Washington DC. We have a rendezvous to keep.”

The ship surged forward, leaving the wreckage of the battle behind. The crew knew there would be more challenges ahead, but they were ready to face them together.

After only a day the ship glided into the harbor of Washington DC, its engines humming softly as it slowed to a halt. The crew gathered at the observation deck, peering out at the city that lay before them.

Washington DC was a shadow of its former self. The once bustling metropolis was now overgrown with dense vegetation. Trees and vines had reclaimed the streets, their roots breaking through the asphalt and concrete. Buildings were draped in green, their facades hidden beneath layers of foliage. Wildlife roamed freely, with deer and other animals moving through the urban jungle.

Yet, amidst the wild overgrowth, one structure stood untouched—the Washington Monument. Its pristine white obelisk rose majestically above the treetops, a solitary sentinel in the heart of the city. The sight was both awe-inspiring and eerie, a stark reminder of the world that once was.

As the ship hovered silently above the harbor, the crew’s sensors picked up unusual activity near the Washington Monument. Commander Volk and Tactical Officer Akita analyzed the data, their expressions growing serious.

“Commander, I’m detecting two groups converging at the Washington Monument,” Akita reported. “It appears to be a meeting between the Murican delegation and the Imperium delegation.”

Our away team marched down there with the Imperium delegation.  Can we get communication with Captain Cullen or Lieutenant Tanaka?

The Prisoner exchange

Prince Ethan Mercer knew he would survive to be ransomed.  The battle to take the ship in the Imperium dock was brutal.  The three soldiers that got through the Imperial perimeter did not survive long.  They were surprised by the crew of the ship still on board armed with primitive weapons, firearms.  Another surprise was the crew of the ship seen were male.  They are obviously not Imperial soldiers as the Imperium are female only.  They also aren't Imperial prisoners, as they were allowed to keep their weapons on the ship.

Remembering those details, he started thinking of how to perhaps use persuasion rather than force to secure the ship.  That will have to happen later.

Imperial guards entered the room along with strangers the Murican prince never saw before.

There were several men in the party, and they had names on their uniforms written in Ancient Murican.  The man in the party with most appearance of authority had the name Cullen.  The female had on her uniform Tanaka.  The cyborg was named Smythe.  The cyborg was seen nearly 5 generations ago.  The Imperial government calls him the Oracle.

"What sorcery is this?" asked the prince.

"These are the crew of the ship, our guests.  You underestimated us again Prince Mercer," answered the highest ranking guard. "we will be escorting you and your personal retinue to the traditional exchange point.  Your cousin Duke Aiden will be waiting for you."

Ethan’s heart sank at the mention of Duke Aiden. His cousin was not just a skilled diplomat and strategist; he harbored ambitions for the Murican throne. Aiden’s desire for power was well-known within the royal circles, and Ethan knew that his cousin would seize any opportunity to advance his claim. The ransom exchange could be more than just a simple negotiation—it could be a pivotal moment in Aiden’s quest for the throne.

As the guards led him away, Ethan’s mind raced. He needed to be cautious and clever, not just to secure his freedom, but to navigate the treacherous waters of Murican politics and his cousin’s ambitions.

Smythe and Cullen discussed the incidents of the night before.

"The exchange point is by the great obelisk, south of here. You remember it as the Washington Monument, but names and landmarks get remembered differently over the centuries."

"Are the roads there safe? I don't need members of the away team getting attacked."

""Considering the Imperatrix herself is coming along, I seriously doubt we will have any bandits along the way.  She enjoys these exchanges, as a way to maintain a psychological advantage over the Muricans.  She personally defeated the Murican forces in a few battles, the most brutal one was the siege of Richmond. The sacking of Richmond resulted in the only thing left of Richmond being a pillar with a sign on it, overlooking the mass grave."

"So this Murican prince has fought the Imperatrix before.  Are there laws of war we don't know about?"

Smythe’s expression turned grim. “The Imperatrix plays by her own rules. The Muricans learned that the hard way. But remember, Cullen, this isn’t just about war. It’s about power, control, and the future of our empire.”

Cullen nodded slowly, absorbing the weight of Smythe’s words. “Then we must be prepared for anything.”

The prisoner parade procession began its march on the fractured highway from the Imperial Base, once known in ancient times as Newark, to the Great Obelisk in the forsaken city formerly called Washington. The scouting cavalry led the way, their banners fluttering in the wind, followed by the disciplined ranks of the Vanguard Infantry. Behind them, the Main Force advanced, with Imperatrix Auriella observing from the parapet of her imposing armored vehicle.

Trailing behind were the prisoners to be exchanged, including Prince Ethan Mercer and his personal retinue. They were permitted to wear their armor, though their weapons were securely locked inside a wagon that followed closely. Tension simmered among the prisoners, their eyes darting to the surrounding terrain, searching for any opportunity to escape.

The away team, consisting of Elizabeth Tanaka, Carl Cullen, and Calvin Smythe, walked behind the wagon alongside the baggage carriers, with the rear guard bringing up the end of the procession. Each day’s march concluded with the Vanguard constructing the resting camp, only for the rear guard engineers to dismantle it the following morning. Whispers of dissent and plans of rebellion circulated among the ranks, adding an undercurrent of unease.

As they traversed the ancient highway, they passed signage pointing to cities long since destroyed and rebuilt. Despite their dilapidated state, these ancient interstate highways still served their purpose, bearing the scars of ages past, including the two world wars fought on this very soil. The haunting remnants of battles fought and lost seemed to echo through the cracked asphalt, a grim reminder of the cost of conflict.

After eight arduous days, punctuated by rest stops for eating and sleeping, the Great Obelisk finally came into view. The sight of the towering monument brought a mix of dread and anticipation.

A slight smile played on the lips of Imperatrix Auriella as she gazed upon the towering monument. She remembered the past times she had personally delivered Prince Mercer to the Obelisk, each encounter a testament to her dominance and his repeated failures. Unbeknownst to her, Prince Ethan Mercer had managed to communicate with his allies, setting the stage for a daring escape attempt. The tension was palpable, and the fate of many hung in the balance as they approached their destination.

Duke Aiden strode into the grand meeting hall, his presence commanding the attention of his Ducal guards and his uncle, the King, who awaited him with a stern expression.

“Your Majesty,” Aiden began, his voice steady but laced with underlying tension, “the Crown Prince failed his mission to capture the ship the Sky People informed us about. Three of his guards returned in funeral boxes. Their wounds were not consistent with the weaponry we know the Imperium uses.”

With a grim expression, the Duke tossed a handful of mashed bullets onto the polished table. The metallic clinks echoed through the hall.

The King picked up one of the bullets, examining it closely. “These are ancient-style bullets,” he murmured, his brow furrowing. “I haven’t seen these used since the Fourth World War, when Murica and the Imperium fought side by side. Has my son fallen victim to this atrocity?”

Aiden’s lips twitched, almost forming a smile at the thought. “No, Uncle. Ethan survived. He is being taken to the Great Obelisk to be exchanged for the noblewomen we captured over the past year. The Imperatrix is certain to relish his humiliation. It might be the only reason she spares his life. Humiliation is more satisfying to her than mere execution. I despise that woman.”

As he spoke, Aiden’s mind wandered to the complex web of emotions he harbored. The thought of Ethan’s failure brought a twisted sense of satisfaction. For years, he had lived in the shadow of his cousin, the Crown Prince, always second in line, always overlooked. The possibility of Ethan’s downfall stirred a dark hope within him—a chance to step out of the shadows and claim the power he believed was rightfully his.

Their rivalry had been a constant presence in Aiden’s life. Ethan, with his charm and natural leadership, had always been the favored one, the golden child destined for greatness. Aiden, on the other hand, had to fight for every scrap of recognition, his achievements often overshadowed by Ethan’s effortless successes. The resentment had festered over the years, turning into a silent, burning rivalry.

Yet, beneath his ambition lay a layer of guilt. He knew the dangers Ethan faced, the pain and fear that came with being a pawn in their political games. Aiden’s hatred for the Imperatrix was fueled not just by her cruelty, but by the way she manipulated and destroyed lives for her own gain. He loathed her for the suffering she inflicted, and for the way she forced him to confront his own darker impulses.

The King’s eyes darkened with a mix of relief and anger. “We must tread carefully, Aiden. The Imperatrix’s thirst for power and vengeance knows no bounds. We cannot afford to underestimate her.”

Aiden nodded, his mind already racing with strategies. “Indeed, Uncle. We must prepare for every eventuality. The Sky People’s involvement complicates matters further. We need to uncover their true intentions.”

As the meeting continued, Aiden’s thoughts remained divided. He was determined to protect his family and his realm, but he could not ignore the personal stakes. The shadows of the past and the uncertainties of the future loomed large over the hall, setting the stage for a conflict that would test the limits of loyalty, power, and survival.
